last night was incredible. my family and oldest friends came up to meet us, we stayed in a sweet hotel and played at the raddest dive in town. to top it all off, the bands we shared the set with were great. turns out, nashville’s full of apt musicians with a lot of soul. check out the sweet pics.

So, last night was a mixed bag for the Fancy. We rolled into St. Louis expecting to play in a welcoming little pizza place and found instead a hostile pizza complex. The staff was incredibly inhospitable, responding to the simplest of request (ie, can I get a Makers on the rocks) with an eye roll and a huff. I mean, I didn’t know that I wasn’t allowed to buy a drink at a bar, but apparently, that’s the case at Cicero’s. As Clara said in her post, the sound guy was good and we actually put on a hell of a show, but nobody was really there to see it…. EXCEPT:

There was another touring band there, Nite Nite, from Nashville (which is where we are now, having an awesome preshow r and r sesh at the hotel suite. They were super friendly and put on a tight show — apparently the goths love them, but so does the Fancy. We’re looking forward to hearing more from them soon.

PUBLIC SPACE ONE — monday night jan 11 ‘10

So we rolled into St. louis, expecting a dive bar with free pizza, and found a really unfortunately terrible place to play a show, gotta say it. Our main man Bo, from Exercise hooked us up with this show, and it was a ton of work for him to get it done and we totally appreciate it! — but the venue might be THE LAMEST place ever!!!! The sound was actually great, but the venue has the most uptight rulse (you have to send paper copies of your poster, 1 week in advance of the show. If you fail to do so, you don’t get ANY GUESTLIST or any pizza or drink tickets). We didn’t know about that and got treated like second class citizens. The sound guy was rad and we had a fun time. Actually, we are watching spinal tap now and its pretty awesome….and we played with an AWESOME BAND CALLED NITE NITE!!! they are our new best friends and so awesome.

Nice article by Peter Margasak

we did it.

we just broke down and did it.

- Skye Carrasco: virtuosic violin playing + a soaring, engaging soprano + whimsical/painterly lyrics = magical performance. I recommend you check her out if you have any love for Final Fantasy, Joanna Newsome, Anni Rossi, Lacrymosa, et al.
- Fahri: I was a little tired after a grueling 11 hour drive from Pittsburg to Milwaukee, but as soon as local band, Fahri, took the stage at the Cactus Club, I instantly perked up. Classic Indie guitar rock played to perfection, these guys amaze me.
-Faux Fir: There is no doubt in my mind that these guys are going to be a force to be reckoned with in the next year or so. Big glitch tunes with tons of soul and brains. Apparently, their Cactus Club performance was their second so far, but from the sound of it, you’d think they’ve been breaking hearts for a decade. Can’t wait to get my hands on a recording.
-Sonmi: Loop pedals, wet guitars, A RECORDER, and song titles like “Twin Beaks” make this Madison band a new Fancy fave.
-El Valiente: Instrumental, surf-inspired jams with a sharp compositional edge — this band had us dancing in no time. Not to mention, their merch table was a site to behold.

Keep it coming… keep it coming.

This tour, while still not even halfway over, has been full of the most wonderful encounters with people we can hardly believe exist. Every stop has introduced us to talented musicians, excited audiences and gracious host. Let me name a few:

Pittsburgh:

Leah (AKA Bloody “Honey” Powers) of Dirty Faces (of Brah! Records) — this bad ass lady hooked us up in SteelerTown with a sweet opening set featuring one of her many side projects, the Spinsters.

They rocked with lyrics like, “You used to be all over me, now you’re just over me.” Need I say more.

After the show, Leah gave us a passionate lecture on football fanatacism (she’s the most informed sports fan I have ever met) and hooked us up on some sweet couches. Rad night.

Milwaukee:

Caitlin & Nathan, friends of the Fancy, offered us their elegant pad and fed us chili AND pancakes. Seriously…. pancakes. And not just some nasty, bad for you pancakes, these were some whole wheat shit! And then there were the freaking cats. 2 of em. One, I was particularly enamored with, named Milla, to which I would love to alter a few lyrics of one of our jams as a dedication. “Oh, Milla the clouds are coming down!”

milla

… in love.

Madison:

We rolled up into Madison without a secure plan of where to rest our weary heads and stay out of the cold, but it didn’t take long to meet our new best friend, DUSTIN!

Dustin, formerly of Civilians, became a Wilde Turkey fan back in the day — found us on Myspace — and has since followed our Fancy trajectory. Now, when he’s not busy making good pop music under the moniker Lord Daughter or learning about electronics, he somehow finds the time to share his apartment with bands he deems worthy. To top it all off, he modeled our shirt at the show and shot photos of us while we worked the crowd at the Frequency. He’s unanimously our new hero. Also, his girlfriend, Cire, makes jewelry, designs interiors and doesn’t even flinch when her man brings a big ole brooklyn band home from the club. On the contrary, she was just as sweet as Dustin. Some people have it made.
